Care
How to Care for Your Bamboo Bedding
- VERY IMPORTANT:Â Â We’ve oversized the linens to allow for the first-time shrinkage that occurs, wash them FIRST to allow for the best fit.
- Zip the duvet, euro sham, or travel pillowcase CLOSED prior to laundering to maintain the integrity of the zipper.
- Wash the linens in cool to warm water with a gentle liquid detergent, and dry on low to medium, removing immediately will reduce wrinkling. WEIRD fact! Bamboo comes out of the washer feeling stiff and canvas-like, that is normal so you don’t have to worry that you’ve harmed your linens.
- For best results, wash the sheets separately from other items, especially towels. Towels produce a lot of lint, which can stick to sheets and create friction which causes pilling. Â Our linens are made from a tight twill weave, which makes a beautiful sheen, and also keeps them from pilling!
- We recommend giving your pillowcases a hard shake to smooth out the hem, before placing it in the dryer. And removing the sheets from the dryer when done will help reduce wrinkling. We don’t coat our linens with formaldehyde, which is a wrinkle-resistant chemical, so it’s natural that bamboo may have a little wrinkling on the hems, or develop soft wrinkles as you sleep on them.  But each time you launder, they come out smooth again!
- Avoid liquid chlorine bleach, fabric softener, dryer sheets, and washer or dryer balls. Harsh detergents can do damage to fine linens and particularly high-quality sheets. Bleach can weaken the rayon fibers, reducing the life of your sheets, and fabric softener and dryer sheets can leave a film on the fabric, reducing the moisture-wicking properties. Dryer sheets can cause discoloration, and washer and dryer balls, similar to washing with towels, can cause pilling.
- For stubborn stains, spray chlorine-free stain remover or a mixture of 1 tablespoon of vinegar with 4 tablespoons of water directly on it, then launder as usual.
- Stains from natural body oils or body lotions can be removed by prewashing your sheets in the washing machine with ¼ cup Dawn dishwashing liquid. Or you can gently rub a few drops of Dawn and water into the stain, then launder as usual. Dawn is a natural de-greaser and works wonders on the stains!
- If you like to iron your linens, you may do so by using high heat and steam, it won’t harm them at all.
 Additional Tips
- If you mix colors when washing, add a Shout Color Catcher to your laundry load to keep your colors true.
- Don’t worry, rayon from bamboo naturally resists bacteria, so washing in cold or warm water will thoroughly clean your BedVoyage sheets!
- It’s normal that the linens feel a bit stiff out of the washer, almost like a light-weight canvas, but once dried; they’re back to a puffy cloud of softness!  Extra lint in the dryer the first couple of washes is normal as well, as some short fibers may release which makes them even softer.
- When hang drying, you may toss the linens in the dryer for 5 minutes to soften the stiffness.
- If you couldn’t take the linens out of the drier immediately, fluff them for ten more minutes in the dryer on high heat and remove promptly, this will remove wrinkles.
- Weirdest Tip! If you have dried blood on your linens, get the person who bled on the sheets to spit on the stain, let it sit for 10 minutes, then always rinse in cold water before laundering. The specific acid in your spit will break down the blood, interesting, huh?!
Towels
- Before using, wash in cool to warm water with a gentle liquid detergent, but no fabric softener. Softeners and dryer sheets can build up on towels which can cause weakening of the fibers and decrease absorbency.  Tumble dry on medium.
- If you use chlorine-free bleach, do not pour it directly onto your towels. Instead, fill the washer with water and add the chlorine-free bleach to dilute it prior to laundering, or pre-soak the linens for half an hour before starting the machine.
Additional Tips
- Give the towels a good shake when removing them from the washer, this fluffs the terry loops and will aid in the absorbency of your towels. Do not iron your towels, as that decreases the absorbency of all towels.
- If your towel develops a snag, simply snip it off with sharp scissors, and it will not continue to snag.
- You may hang your towels to dry outside, and if they need to be softened up, just toss in the dryer for a few minutes on high and this brings back the softness.
 Blankets
- Launder the blankets in warm water using a gentle liquid detergent, on a short cycle with gentle agitation. We recommend inserting the travel blanket in a lingerie bag so that other items in the wash won’t snag the knitted weave. Then remove from the bag and either tumble dry on low to medium heat or hang dry.
- The Bed blankets don’t need a lingerie bag but are recommended to be only laundered with other fine washables, and nothing that may snag the knitted weave.  Do not use liquid chlorine bleach or washer balls. Bleach can weaken the rayon fibers, reducing the life of your blanket. Washer and dryer balls, like washing with towels, can cause pilling or snagging on the blanket.
Additional Tips
- Beware of using your BedVoyage blanket for your pets, their nails can catch the weave and create snags.
- If you see a snag in the blanket, you can gently pull on either side of the weave and work the snag out until the blanket is smooth again.
FAQs
What is the point of a coverlet? What is the difference between a bedspread and a coverlet?
A: A coverlet is a lightweight bedspread that is quilted or woven. BedVoyage’s bamboo coverlet is quilted and designed as a decorative layer to go over thicker bedspreads or duvet covers, for a layered bedding idea. Our coverlets have a thin layer of polyester batting in-between bamboo layers, to be used as a stand-alone bed covering or added insulation. The coverlet, bedspread, and comforter are all used for bed decoration and insulation purposes. However, a coverlet and bedspread are thin and lightweight, while the comforter is a thick type of bed covering.
Is a Coverlet warm?
A: Our decorative coverlet is a thin, poly-filled type of bedding that is meant to cover the surface of the bed and the sides of the box spring and is lightweight and perfect for hot sleepers. Adding a quilted coverlet is the finishing touch for a layered bedding look. However, coverlet bedding is not as thick and warm as heavier comforters.
How do I wash a bamboo Quilted Coverlet?  The same as a Cotton Coverlet?Â
A: Rayon from Bamboo is best cared for by washing in cold or warm water and drying on low to medium heat. Proper washing will extend the life; you can expect to get 5-6 years from your coverlet with proper laundering. Using hot water and high heat can cause any linens to pill, which are the uncomfortable bumps you’ll see on some sweaters or low-quality sheets. Also, rayon is resistant to bacteria, so if you are used to using bleach to kill any bacteria, there is no need to do so with bamboo. A great benefit for your health and the environment!
What is the Bamboo thread count in the Coverlet Bedspread?
A: Thread count is something that many sheet-shoppers look for, usually opting for higher counts, expecting more softness. But thread count is not the most important factor in how soft a sheet is; the material of the threads from which it’s made is the most important factor. This means that our 300 thread count Coverlet is softer and costs less than cotton coverlets with higher thread counts. Additionally, a thread count of 300 for bamboo is very high. We’ve opted for the ‘sweet spot’ of 300 thread count as this will have incredible softness AND keep the breathability of the linens, although they’ll feel like 1,000 thread count Pima cotton.
Is Bamboo Viscose and Rayon from Bamboo the same thing?
A: Yes, the process of breaking down the bamboo stalk into a fiber is the same for both viscose or rayon. Because the end fiber is indistinguishable from other wood pulps (ie; eucalyptus, beechwood, pine, etc.)  the Federal Trade Commission requires that it be called one of those terms. We have chosen to call them ‘rayon viscose from Bamboo’ to be in line with what most large retailers are using so that consumers are not confused.
Will a Cal-King Coverlet fit a King bed?
A: Yes, it will. We’ve designed the duvet to be a bit universal, to fit King and Cal-King beds. A Cal-King is a bit longer and narrower, so you’ll have a bit of extra drape on the sides of the bed.
Where are Coverlets made?
A: BedVoyage linens are manufactured responsibly at the largest home textile factory in China. Our factory has passed a stringent 25 point review process by many US retailers, as well as yearly passing the Social Responsibility Audit. This ensures there are no child workers, employees are not over-worked or underpaid and work in an environment where there are safeguards in place to ensure their health and safety. We are proud to be processing our bamboo in such a responsible factory!
How long does a Bamboo Coverlet last?
A: These eco-friendly Coverlets can last up to 5-7 years if properly cared for. If you use only one Coverlet, when cared for properly, our Bamboo Coverlet typically lasts for 5 years. If you rotate between multiple Decorative Coverlets, each will last 6-8 years. In comparison, traditional cotton coverlets usually only last 1-3 before you need to replace them.
Can you hang dry Bamboo Coverlets?
A: Yes, you can. Once they are air-dried, you can toss in the dryer for 5-10 minutes if you need to get any ‘crispness’ softened.
Do Bamboo Coverlets wrinkle?
A: We don’t coat our linens with formaldehyde, which is a wrinkle-resistant toxin that the cotton industry uses. Therefore, they will get a soft wrinkle when you sleep on them, but with each fresh laundering, they’ll come out of the dryer silky smooth again.
How to clean Decorative Coverlets? Â Do you have to use a special detergent?
A:Â We recommend a mild liquid detergent like Ecos, Mrs. Myers, Woolite, Seventh Generation, ECover, or Kirkland Ultra Clean. No bleach, no fabric softener, and no washer balls or dryer sheets/balls are needed or recommended. Harsher detergents can break down the fibers faster, shortening the lifespan of the linens.
Are Bamboo Coverlets good for hot sleepers?
A: Yes, one of the remarkable qualities of rayon from Bamboo is that it’s thermal regulating. This means that the fibers sense your needs and adjust accordingly, bamboo will release the excess heat for hot sleepers, but keep the warmth in for cold sleepers. The micro-gaps and holes in the fibers act like a ‘smart fabric’ and know when to adjust the temperature.
Can you iron a Quilted Coverlet?
A: Yes, absolutely, and even with high heat and steam. A little trick to reduce ironing: dry the Coverlet on high for the last 10 minutes of the cycle and remove immediately, and they will come out smooth.
Does pet hair wash off easily? Â My dog sheds and sleeps on my bed.
A: Yes, most of the pet hair should come off in the wash, or you can use a lint roller between laundry days. Remember rayon from Bamboo fabric naturally resists bacteria, so your bed linens won’t accumulate the same amount of smell that cotton sheets might, and rayon is anti-static, so it won’t cling to pet fur and other lints. Our durable tight twill weave helps prevent snagging of pet’s claws, better than satin weave sheets, or knitted flannels.
Do Bamboo Coverlet fade?
A:Â No, we have used eco-friendly reactive dye to keep the colors deep and true.
Are Bamboo Coverlets Silky? Will they slide off the bed?
A: Yes, Bamboo Duvets have a soft, silky feel. But no, our Bamboo Coverlets get softer and cozier when you wash them, not like satin coverlets where all your bedding slides onto the floor!!
